Who is Kalakamu?
Kalakamu is a Finnish company running fly fishing trips built around a simple idea: a cabin on the good water, a couple of guided days to learn it, then time to fish on your own terms. Right now that's a week in Patagonia (Aysén, Chile), with Finnmark in Northern Norway in the works. We've fished these places ourselves and work with the local guides and hosts who know them best. Our job is to get you on the right water with the right knowledge.
What's included in the trip price?
Each trip page has the exact breakdown of what's included and what's not, so there are no surprises.
How do I book and pay?
We use WeTravel for secure and straightforward bookings. Each destination page has a button to open up the booking portal. A deposit secures your spot, and the remaining balance is due before the deadline specified in your booking confirmation. All payments are handled securely through WeTravel.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that plans can change. Our cancellation terms are outlined on our terms page and depend on how far in advance you cancel. Generally, earlier cancellations are eligible for a larger refund. Please review the specific terms at the time of booking, and feel free to contact us if you have questions.
When is the best time to go?
The exact best window depends on the region and species you're targeting. Each trip page includes details on timing, and we're happy to help you pick the right dates.
What skill level do I need?
You don't need to be an expert. If you can put a fly on the water in a bit of wind, you'll catch fish, and if you've fished your whole life, there's plenty here to keep you occupied. Tell us where you're at when you book and we'll match you with the right guide. Not sure about your skill level? Just ask, and we'll work it out together.
What gear should I bring?
In general, you should bring your own rod, reel, and waders if you have them. A 5wt or 6wt rod covers most trout fishing. Our Field Guide has packing lists for each destination.
Are flights included?
Flights are not included in our trip prices. You'll need to book your own flights.
Do I need a visa or fishing license?
EU citizens do not need a visa to enter Chile for stays under 90 days. A valid passport is required. Local fishing licenses are arranged as part of the trip.
How about insurance?
You need your own travel insurance. We recommend making sure that the insurance covers flight delays or cancellations and luggage.
Can I come solo, or how many people can come?
Both work. Come solo and there's a smaller cabin just for that; come as a pair or a small group and the riverside cabins sleep two to four, priced per person. Either way, the cabin is yours for the week, and you're not sharing it with strangers. Tell us your group when you book and we'll set it up.
Can a non-fishing partner come?
Absolutely. We can customize the trip to include non-fishing activities too.
My preferred dates are not available. Can I customize?
Yes. If you'd like custom dates, extra guided days, or anything else, just send us a message and we'll see what we can do.
I don't speak Spanish — can I still go to Patagonia?
Yes. Your host and guides speak English, and the trip is set up so you don't need Spanish to make it work — transfers, grocery runs, and guided days are all handled with you. A few words of Spanish go a long way in Coyhaique and people appreciate the effort, but you won't be stuck without them.
How fit do I need to be?
Reasonably fit is enough. We mostly do wade fishing with riverbank walking between runs, but no technical hiking, no long climbs, and the cabin sits right on the water. Guided days go at your pace, and on independent days you decide how far you roam. If you have a specific concern, ask us and we'll tell you honestly whether the trip fits.
